Sure enough as I looked ahead, I dozed off. I just couldn't help it. I don't know why, but it was a good sleep. Not a thought in my head. Just the road ahead, and I drifted into a warm sleep.
Next think I knew, Ren was giving me a shake. "Are you hungry?"
In fact, I was famished. But I looked up at him sleepily. "What?" I felt a little dreamily just staring at the freckles on his face. Really, he was an odd creature, but still functioning much better than me at the moment.
"Come on." He opened the door and helped me up. We were at a truck stop. I asked where we were.
"Oklahoma." He shrugged.
"OKLAHOMA?" That woke me up. "Are you serious?"
He nodded. How long had I been out? Naturally, Ren didn't give me a chance to ask. I followed him into the truck stop and we found us a booth. I couldn't believe this. I was at least a state away from my mother.
"Well, you did want to go to the beach, didn't you?" He shrugged once more as he sat there.
"Well, Yeah, but, you know, I didn't think you were really listening, or anything." I sucked in a breath as I watched him like someone brand new. I let a smile slip. This was totally amazing. I was running away from home. I guessed.
"So what are you hungry for?" He let me order first. I decided on the special of the day. Roast beef and mashed potato sandwich. He got a burger and fries. I looked around, not even wanting the time. Finally, I managed to turn on my cell and saw all the missed phone calls. Mostly from my mother. One from Jess. I was hoping for more from him and less from my mom, but it didn't work that way. Evidently. It was three in the afternoon.
"How did you decide, you know, to do this?" I asked after turning off my phone. No need to spoil dinner with phone calls from home.
"You didn't stop me." His green eyes dazzled. I wondered if he knew I had been asleep all this time?
